Tomato Sauce

Description

This home made tomato sauce can be used to create all sorts of delicious family meals.

Ingredients

1 medium onion
1 clove of garlic
1 tsp oil
400 g (large) tin chopped tomatoes
Small handful of fresh basil or a big pinch of dried herbs

Directions

1.Peel and slice the onion in half, then chop each half into small pieces. Peel the garlic clove and chop it into very small pieces.

2.Heat the oil in a saucepan or frying pan. Add the chopped onion, cook over a medium heat for 3-4 min, stirring occasionally.

3. Add the tomatoes and stir well. If using fresh basil, tear or chop the leaves into small pieces. Add the basil or dried herbs to the mixture in the pan. Simmer gently for 15 min.

Serving suggestions:
The sauce can be served on its own with some cooked spaghetti or pasta shapes.

To make a creamy tomato sauce for babies over 6 months old and for children, serve the adult portions first, then add 2 teaspoons of cream cheese to the tomato sauce and stir before serving.

Keep cooled leftover sauce in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat it in a pan until piping hot all the way through.

Make double the amount and freeze some.

TIPS:
Grow herbs on a windowsill, involving children with sowing and watering the seeds.
